Maverick’s in East Boston Improves and Reopens as Maverick House Tavern,
Under New Management to Resolve Prior Management Issues
“Maverick House Tavern” (formerly “Maverick’s”), a local landmark in East Boston at 154 Maverick St., has reopened with a new name and new management. A short closure allowed an upgrade to the restaurant and bar, its menu and services, and to improve its entertainment and outdoor dining capabilities. It also enabled 154 Maverick LLC, the owner of the business since 2015 and now its direct manager, to resolve problems that arose under the prior manager.
John Tyler, the manager of the LLC, states: “We will continue all that was best in this unique spot in East Boston, with more music, entertainment and games, in an expanded and upgraded interior and outdoor space. We are certain that our outdoor dining and service will be more attractive as the weather improves and Covid is a reduced concern. While we regret that Daniel Lyons, the prior manager, is no longer working with us, the LLC’s recovery of management of its own restaurant and licenses was required to fix a number of serious management problems.”
John Tyler explained, “Dan Lyons’ management was becoming a concern that escalated after the LLC was contacted by the State about unpaid unemployment insurance for restaurant staff going back a few years. It was also discovered that Lyons had failed to pay the staff’s federal payroll taxes that had been deducted from their wages. Despite having sufficient restaurant revenue to pay the unemployment insurance and payroll taxes, Lyons paid payment of personal expenses and salary had not left sufficient funds to pay the government. 154 Maverick LLC had no choice but to act and correct the problems.” John Tyler, further explained, “The LLC asked Lyons to explain and fix these serious problems but he never responded. This failure harmed the staff and endangered the LLC’s liquor, food and entertainment licenses used by the restaurant. We had no choice but to protect the employees, and that required control of the restaurant to insure that all of the staff’s tax and insurance obligations are met, which 154 Maverick LLC is now doing.”
Unfortunately, Lyons response was to attack the LLC and its manager, John Tyler, with false claims on social media that Lyons owned the business and that it was “stolen” from him. These misrepresentations spread–as they often do–and harmed the business and reputations of the LLC and John Tyler. According to John Tyler, “It is very unfortunate that things ended up this way, but 154 Maverick LLC, had no choice in the matter. The business and its reputation have been damaged, and my reputation also, and it will be hard to fix this. But we are encouraged by the response of those who know the real facts, and by their support, and we hope to return this unique place in East Boston to its former status.”
Those who seek more details can find them in the public record, in a Suffolk Superior Court lawsuit, 154 Maverick LLC vs. Lyons, Daniel (2284-CV-00891).
